DESCENT

Eva hid her shock at seeing the Lord Admiral again, only allowing herself to close her eyes long enough to maintain her composure. Staff bustled around the medical station where she had been brought after her rescue from the hospital, but their noises faded into the background.

She didn’t know what to say to him.

He gently touched the side of her head, his caress on the short, stubby spikes of her hair uncomfortable.

“I was told they’d shaved your head to perform your surgeries,” he said sympathetically, speaking to her in Est instead of English. “Still, it’s somewhat of a shock seeing you like this. How long will it take to grow back?”

“I don’t know,” Eva replied in his language. A year? Two years? She had no idea.

“We will find you a wig to wear in the meantime. That will also cover most of your scar.” His finger traced her scar from the top of her head down along the side of her nose. She kept her face passive, her own hands rooted to the bed at her side. “On our world we have skin surgeons who will be able to treat it. I’m assured that most of it can be removed and healed. The Lord Admiral pulled her to himself and held her. She cried into his shoulder, not attempting to act or to control herself or her emotions. She simply cried.

She had lost too much. The beautiful, soft, tanned skin of her back and shoulders was now covered in scars. Her hair was gone. Her face was permanently marked from the fight she had lost with the guards. Earth was gone. She would probably never return there.

She didn’t even know why she had come to Hrwang.

Her mission.

Her mission was a joke. An impossible fantasy. Go to an alien world and get help.

How?

Her situation was worse than her infiltration of the Hrwang leadership had been. At least on Earth, at Hearst Castle, she could sneak out and provide information to her friends.

She should have killed the Lord Admiral while they were still on Earth. Despite his duty, the Lieutenant Grenadier, the first one, Tomes Nadovi, the only Hrwang who had told her his name, would have protected her. He would have helped her escape. He would have covered up her assassination of the Lord Admiral. She should have done it then.

She could kill him now. She would be killed immediately. No one on Earth would ever know of her sacrifice; they probably already mourned her loss. If she were killed now, it wouldn’t make any difference.

Her arms were around him, his around her, and she only had to reach up and strangle him.

But in the thought, she knew better.

She was too weak. He
